Funerals at Abbey United Reformed Church

Thanksgiving and Comfort

The introduction to the funeral service used at Abbey United Reformed Church begins with these words:

'We have come together to worship God and to give thanks and praise for the life of…………… We have come to pray for the comfort and strength that God promises to us. We have come to affirm the Christian conviction that death is not the end but a new beginning.'

A time to give thanks

Despite the feelings of shock and sorrow, people normally wish to make the service above all a time to give thanks for the person's life. Making the service personal by choosing music and hymns, talking to the minister about the person, perhaps involving others in readings etc, make the act of worship a true act of remembrance of the person involved. Every person is unique and of great worth in God's eyes, whether their life was full or very humble.

Comfort and strength

The minister is available for you to talk over your feelings, as you come to terms with the death of your loved one. Whether the death was expected or sudden, you will experience a range of emotions to work through over many months. The church does assure you of its prayers, sympathy and support during this time.

Christian Conviction

Faith can be sorely tested in the face of death and suffering. However many have found the assurance of a God of compassion who is with them has carried them through the heartaches of life. In the Bible Paul shared his conviction in these words:

'I am convinced that there is nothing in death or life, in the realm of spirits or superhuman powers, in the world as it is or the worlds as it shall be, in the forces of the universe, in heights or depths, nothing in all creation that can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.' (Romans 8 vs. 38 -39)
